Heart disease. On the threshold of life and death.

 Each year, about 200 children are born in the Republic of Moldova with critical congenital heart defects. These defects require surgical intervention in their first year of life, and sometimes in the very first days. About 300 surgeries are performed in our Republic annually for children with heart defects. In total around 500-600 kids requires this intervention.

NGO «Save Life» explored the issue of cardiology and cardiac surgery in the Republic of Moldova with the cardiology department of Children’s Municipal Clinical Hospital of V. Ignatenko, Mother and Child Clinic Center and Child Cardiac Surgery Department of the Republican Clinical Hospital. As a result there are many issues to be resolved in this area.

The main problems of Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology Department as of today are:

- Complete absence of Neonatology Cardio-surgery;

- Incapacity to perform a surgery for children with great vessels
transposition, due to lack of proper medical equipment. About 10-15
children per year require such type of surgery. The cost of these
operations ranges from 5 000 to 12 000 EUR on the territory of the
Ukraine, depending of the case;

- Surgeries with a high degree of pulmonary hypertension is also not
possible due to lack of necessary medical equipment;

- Intensive Care Units are not equipped properly;

- Need for staff training in cases of complicated surgeries and other
types of interventions in such cases;

- Old patient's room equipment;

Summarizing, we can say that our hospitals do not have necessary conditions for a full and correct diagnosis and management of children after complicated surgeries. That is why our children have to travel abroad of the Republic of Moldova. Such a measure is the only way to save the life of a child in most of the cases. It's often comes to count the days, and if parents do not have the possibility to pay for the operation, they will lose their child.

To help children with CHD, we work with several cardiac centers from the Ukraine and Russian Federation. Average cost of the open heart surgery is about  8,000 USD. Early treatment is crucial. But in most cases, parents do not the capacity to pay the operation alone. And then the stories of these children appear on our web page.
